This book focuses on the gendered experiences of environmental change across different geographies and social contexts in South Asia and on diverse strategies of adapting to climate variability. The book analyzes how changes in rainfall patterns, floods, droughts, heatwaves and landslides affect those who are directly dependent on the agrarian economy. It examines the socio-economic pressures, including the increase in women’s work burdens both in production and reproduction on gender relations. It also examines coping mechanisms such as male migration and the formation of women’s collectives which create space for agency and change in rigid social relations. The volume looks at perspectives from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal to present the nuances of gender relations across borders along with similarities and differences across geographical,socio-cultural and policy contexts. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of sociology, development, gender, economics, environmental studies and South Asian studies. It will also be useful for policymakers, NGOs and think tanks working in the areas of gender, climate change and development.
The primacy of education in development agendas is unquestioned. With the gradual acknowledgement of the potential benefits that migration can hold for development, the relationship between migration and education is a growing area of research. Migration, Education and Socio-Economic Mobility explores how the decisions people make in terms of both their migration choices and educational investments, mediated as they are by gender, class, caste and nationality, can potentially contribute to earning incomes, building social and symbolic capital, or reshaping gender relations, all elements contributing to the process of economic and social mobility. Much of the existing literature examining the links between migration and education focuses either on the investment of migrant remittances in the education of their children back home or on 'brain drain' that refers to the migration of skilled workers from the developing to the developed world. Most of these discussions are firmly rooted in materialist arguments and while undeniably important, tend to underplay the social processes through which migration and education interact to shape people's lives, identities and status in society. Along with economic security, people also aspire to social mobility and status enhancement. The ideas presented in this book take a more varied and nuanced view of the relationship between education and migration. This book was originally published as a special issue of Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education.

This book celebrates the long, varied and distinguished career of Mina Swaminathan, a leading practitioner, trainer and writer in the field of education, focusing specifically on early childhood education, gender and communication. Her concern with innovative educational strategies for children, adults and teachers led her to use drama and theatre extensively, as tools to explore a variety of wider social issues, from oppressive social relationships to alternate sexualities. This not only prepared the ground for interrogating assumptions about gender roles, relations and processes of socialisation but also contributed to setting in motion a process of social change and women's empowerment, with emphasis on issues ranging from maternity entitlements and the right to development of children below six, to a curriculum for gender studies, and using theatre and creative communication strategies for advocacy. Rather than viewing these fields and disciplines as independent silos, this book seeks to bring together different perspectives and social concerns in relation to education, viewed as a broad field of learning, questioning and deepening understandings. It highlights the important role of not just analysis and interpretation of evidence, but equally effective communication. This book consists of two parts, written at different times and with different purposes. They are not sequential, yet belong together. The first tells the story of the life of M.S. Swaminathan, and his dream of securing human dignity through food sovereignty in India, and the second reflects on the implications and nuances of the story. The first part of the book is more biographical in nature; a large number of experiences throughout his life are discussed, not necessarily in chronological order. Part two, however, is more reflective in nature, and concerned with issues which had to be confronted in the course of his career. In this part, he reflects on how politics has influenced and shaped the course of agricultural development; and how different ethical stances, often in conflict, have come into play. This is not just a historical account, but equally valid in present times.
